What is an RSS feed? Really Simple Syndication

RSS Feed Aggregators

So Let's Set Up an RSS Feed Aggregator

  1. At Home: Choose one aggregator from the list or use one of your own.
  2. I use IGoogle. I set up an IGoogle account, following the directions, using my usual login name and password.
  3. Then I made two tabs. One is home and one is blogs.
    1. My home tab brings me information about local weather, local, national, and world news, stock market information, etc. Set it up for you - add sports, entertainment info, etc.
    2. My blog tag brings all my blogs to me.
  4. When I want to add a feed, I just click on the feed tag on the site. Let's try that together. Here's a blog I like that has feeds to choose from. http://teachingeverystudent.blogspot.com/ Let's follow along.
    1. Click on the link to Teaching Every Student.
    2. Scroll down the page until you find the "Subscribe to" button on the right sidebar.
    3. Click on the arrow next to "Posts".
    4. Now you get to choose your aggregator. If your reader is not there, then choose Atom or Universal Subscription Mechanism. Copy that feed URL and paste it into your reader.
    5. In IGoogle, I add a Slim RSS Reader and use that to add the feed.

Blogs to Follow

http://movingforward.wikispaces.com/Blogs - This wiki, created by Dr. Scott McLeod, has dozens of excellent links to check out.
I find only a few blogs to be must-reads. The rest of the blogs on my blogroll are personal - teachers I have met online whose writing speaks to me. Find some of your own. When reading a blog that is linked to another, follow the link. See if this is someone you'd enjoy reading.

My Must-Reads:
David Warlick's 2cents Worth
Will Richardson's Weblogg-ed
Wes Fryer's Moving at the Speed of Creativity
Vicki Davis' Cool Cat Teacher Blog
Kristin Hokanson's Connected Classroom
